Where lead does its work
Chimney flashings
Step and cover flashings chased into the brick or stone joints, with a back gutter behind wide stacks.
Valleys
Lead-lined valleys where two slopes meet, laid in sensible lengths with proper laps.
Bay and porch roofs
Small lead roofs over bays and porches, dressed over wood rolls.
Abutments
Where a roof meets a wall, soakers and cover flashings keep water out of the joint.
Dormer cheeks and tops
Lead around dormer windows, a common source of hidden leaks.
Replacing mastic bodges
Flashings that have been smeared with sealant are stripped and re-done in lead.

Getting leadwork right
Sheet sizes and laps
Lead moves as it warms and cools. Pieces that are too long, or fixed too tightly, split. We follow the Lead Sheet Training Academy guidance on lengths, laps and fixings.
Chimneys in soft local stone
Pulborough’s older buildings use local sandstone and ironstone alongside Sussex brick. Chasing flashings into soft stone needs care so the joint does not crumble and let water behind the lead.
Why mastic is not a repair
Sealant can stop a drip for a season, but it hardens and cracks in sun and frost. Proper lead flashings are the long-term answer.
Leadwork questions
Do you use lead substitutes?
We use sheet lead as standard. If you prefer a substitute for security reasons, we can discuss it.
Can a leaking chimney be fixed without scaffolding?
Sometimes, with a roof ladder and access tower. We tell you what is needed at the visit.
